Devon & Cornwall

Most people who visit Devon and Cornwall, often for their holidays, will leave with wonderful memories: of the magnificent views, the breathtaking environment - all cherished by the people living and working in the area. So, as you can see, there's strong cause for us to keep protecting these special places – so more people can engage, enjoy and learn to love the timeless beauty that will always remain at the soul of these counties.

From the joys of spotting seals in the frothing waters of Kynance Cove, to climbing the steps to St Michael's Mount, or navigating your way out of the maze at Glendurgan, there's so much to keep you amused and entertained. However, this is one region where we are even more acutely aware than most of the effects of climate change on our coastal communities, and we have been doing some pioneering work in this field at places like Boscastle and Mullion Cove.

Miles of coastline, wonderful gardens, woodland, farmland, stunning houses and wild moorland – it is no wonder the glorious South West has a powerful magnetism. These are counties so passionate about growing food and sustainable living, crammed full of natural resources: wind, water, wood, wave, solar, tidal and geothermal, what better place to lead the way in being resilient to climate change and aspire to be energy neutral? We're constantly reducing consumption, while generating our own energy – with the new woodchip heating system at Castle Drogo being a fantastic example of this.

From coastlines to countryside, these unique spaces belong to us all. That's why we're so flexible in the use of our properties, and as much as we share and interpret, we listen and react. With IIP accreditation conveying a deep, embedded focus on our people, we've got an ear on the ground in the local communities, and expect all our people to work openly and collaboratively with each other as well as the communities they are part of.

A word from our Director, Mark Harold

"In these tough economic times, we're seeing ever increasing numbers of visitors appreciating the simple pleasures that come from connecting with nature. They're becoming more aware of the importance of looking after our history and environment, for generations to come – and in an area so rich and overflowing with natural beauty, we're set on preserving the past, involving the present and keeping an all-seeing eye on the future. I want someone to come in and inspire, to get people to share their conservation passion and skills with everyone. A clear leader with vision will help us do this, while meeting the region's ever changing, challenging needs and significantly reducing our carbon footprint."
