South East

'Busy, busy, busy.' That's how South East residents might describe their lives. A relatively affluent part of the country with a strong focus on economic development, it is attracting more and more people every year, which in turn is putting further pressure on open green spaces, natural resources and supporting infrastructure. Amidst this fast pace of life, the special places the National Trust has to offer become even more precious.

Our region boasts a high density and number of beautiful properties – built and open space – as well as miles of dramatic coastline. Each of these places offers an invaluable, easy-to-get-to opportunity for frazzled families to escape from the demands of everyday life and refresh their heart and soul.

From great houses such as Polesden Lacey, Uppark and Knole, or the former homes of historic, literary figures such as Rudyard Kipling, Henry James, Virginia Woolf and Sir Winston Churchill, there's ample opportunity to take a fascinating walk through history in the South East. Visitors stroll through much-loved gardens such as Sissinghurst and Claremont Landscape Garden whilst the open spaces across the Surrey Hills, Kent Countryside and the South Downs, soon to become England's newest National Park, provide daily enjoyment for millions.
