Thames & Solent

We don't need to tell you that life's fast paced these days. We all need a break from time to time, a step away from the hum drum of life and a spot of spiritual and physical refreshment – and this is never more the case than in the busy Thames and Solent region, which is the most densely populated in the country with around 11 million people living and working there. The beauty, of course, for us is that the great variety of fabulous places in our care – tranquil splendours like the gardens of Hinton Ampner and William Morris' Red House – are never more than a stone's throw away.

The region's population is also hugely diverse, and here at the National Trust we need to make sure we cater for such diversity. Within the region, we've had some exciting, recent acquisitions, specifically 575 Wandsworth Road, because one of our key challenges is spotting the heritage of the future and engaging those who might never have thought of getting involved with the National Trust.

Whether people want a stroll around Ashridge Estate, marveling at the panoramic views and rare wildlife, see great collections brought to life at Waddesdon Manor or experience Europe's most influential landscape gardens at Stowe, we want to make sure there's something for everyone, for ever.

So, for plenty of projects to get your teeth into, this is the place. From the restoration of heathland in the New Forest, to a £million project to breathe new life into Basildon Park, you'll enjoy the huge responsibility of reaching out to these people, and transporting them from the 21 century grind to a place of sanctuary.
